                                              DIA 11 DE SETEMBRO DE 2001:

Na manhã do dia 11 de setembro de 2001 dezenove sequestradores assumiram o controle de quatro aviões comerciais em rota para São Francisco e Los Angeles partindo de Boston, Newark e Washington, D.C. (Aeroporto Internacional Washington Dulles). Às 08h46min, o Voo 11 da American Airlines atingiu a Torre Norte do World Trade Center, seguido pelo Voo 175 da United Airlines que atingiu a Torre Sul às 09h03.

Outro grupo de sequestradores do Voo 77 da American Airlines atingiu o Pentágono às 09h37min. Um quarto voo, o Voo 93 da United Airlines caiu em uma área rural perto de Shanksville, Pensilvânia às 10h03min, depois de os passageiros terem tentado retomar o controle do avião dos sequestradores. Acredita-se que a meta final dos sequestradores seria o Capitólio (sede do Congresso dos Estados Unidos) ou a Casa Branca.

                                                                         Vitimas:

Houve um total de 2.996 mortes, incluindo os 19 sequestradores e as 2.977 vítimas. As vítimas foram distribuídas da seguinte forma: 246 nos quatro aviões (onde não houve sobreviventes), 2606 na cidade de Nova Iorque e 125 no Pentágono. Todas as mortes ocorridas foram de civis, exceto por 55 militares atingidos no Pentágono.

Assim, no dia 27 de setembro de 2001, o FBI pode determinar seus nomes e em muitos casos detalhes como a data de nascimento, residências conhecidas ou possíveis, o estado dos respectivos vistos, e a identidade específica dos supostos pilotos.

As investigações do Governo dos Estados Unidos incluíram a operação do FBI, a maior já feita na história, com mais de 7.000 agentes envolvidos.
